National Healthy Skin Month

With the changing seasons, our providers wanted to give our patients their top skin care tips to keep your skin healthy all year long!

  • Wear sunscreen: Sun protection should be applied during any season, even on gray and gloomy days. Dr. Rachel Pritzker loves EltaMD UV Elements SPF 44, which is gentle for even the most sensitive skin types. The chemical-free sunscreen provides safe but sure sun protection. The mineral-based UV filters work with hydrating hyaluronic acid to protect and hydrate the skin.
  • Protect dry lips: Our Physician Assistant duo, Whitney and Brittany, recommend you carry a product like Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm with cortisone for extremely chapped lips (applied twice per day) or the Avène Cicalfate Lip Balm for moisture. Apply generously to ensure lips remain protected and plump.
  • Moisturize: Your skin needs to stay hydrated to be healthy. You may even need to upgrade to something a little more rich and emollient to survive the colder temperatures. Dr. Lauren Fine suggests the Avène Skin Recovery Cream for face and Avène Xeracalm Balm for body. If using a moisturizer doesn’t quite quench the thirst prep, Dr. Carolyn Jacob suggests prepping the skin with Revision Hydrating Serum first.
  • Check moles head-to-toe: Our CCSD providers recommend having your skin examined annually. Call us at 312-245-9965 opt. 2 and ask for a Full Body Skin Examination. At home you can check your skin for any new moles, growths or signs of irritation. If anything changes or something new appears – we need to know about it!

It’s here – the lazy guide to perfect summer skin!

AM & PM / Cleansing:

Daily sun often causes our skin to suffer from build-up of sweat, sunscreen residue, oil and city grime. Under these circumstances, be sure to rinse your face morning and night to avoid acne. There is nothing wrong with using a cleansing wipe (it’s better than doing nothing) but remember they are often filled with chemicals that shouldn’t remain on your face! We recommend using the EltaMD Foaming Facial Cleanser as it is gentle enough to be used night and day, a great deal at $25.

AM / Antioxidants are your friend:
If you still feel that your summer glow hasn’t quite emerged, or that your sunscreen alone isn’t quite cutting it in the protection stakes, give your skin a boost of Vitamin C. Antioxidants are packed with anti-aging benefit, giving you brighter, healthier looking skin all summer long. We recommend Skinceuticals C E Ferulic or Skinceuticals Phloretin CF, which are both light serums perfect for hot days where you don’t want to smother too many products on your face. This month CCSD has 15% off any sunscreen and antioxidant combo when purchased together in the same transaction.

AM / Sunscreen:
A simple tip for the summer months is to use a moisturiser with at least SPF30 (and reapplying throughout the day). This way you can be one-and-done, without multiple steps or overloading your skin with goopy creams. Dr. Jacob loves the Neocutis Journee Bio_restorative Day Cream for it’s anti-aging collagen growth factors. Dr. Pritzker frequently recommends the EltaMD UV Elements SPF44 Tinted which contains hydrators and is perfect for sensitive skin. Dr. Ibrahim’s vote goes to the new Revision Intellishade TruPhysical SPF44, a 5-in-1 anti-aging moisturizer that works to correct, protect, conceal and brighten. All available in store now!

PM / Fitting in facemasks:
If you’re a lazy beauty or beau, face masks may just be your saviour.  To restore glow we recommend the Sesha Cell-White Brightening Mask to lighten and brighten, smooth fine lines, calm and hydrate skin. The Revision Black Mask is a popular silt-based product providing a deep cleanse, ridding the skin of impurities and excess sebum. Our brand new CCSD Reverse Peel Pads 15% are convenient and easy to use as they gently exfoliate, maintain cell turnover and assist in the removal of oil and residue on the skin. Although masks are soaring in popularity right now, whatever you do, please remember the internet is not your Dermatologist! Some of the ingredients in these products are not to be taken lightly. Watch HERE to see our very own Dr. Lauren Fine talk about a real life patient experience on Fox32 News.

Join the Sunscreen Scene

Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen offering Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays), an SPF 30 or higher and with water resistance. When dealing with reapplication, the FDA requirement for label directions is to reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. However, everyone should be aware that redness is not a sign to reapply sunscreen, but rather to to get out of the sun. If the skin is red at the time of reapplying, this is a sign your skin is already burning. In addition to wearing sunscreen, dermatologists recommend taking the following steps to protect your skin and find skin cancer early:
Seek shade
– One shot glass amount (1oz) of sunscreen will cover your entire body
Wear protective clothing
– Use extra caution near water, snow and sand
Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet
Avoid tanning beds
– Check your birthday suit on your birthday with a board-certified CCSD provider!
