ALL ABOUT VITAMIN C
Written by: Angie Nesci, Licensed Aesthetician
With Spring officially here, many of us will plan to spend more time outdoors, so there is no better time to discuss an essential skincare ingredient that we all should be using daily, vitamin C. I know we have all heard of, used, or seen skincare products containing this legendary ingredient, but what makes it so legendary you ask? Because it works! But how does vitamin C work on the skin? Does it have the same effect on the skin as eating foods rich in vitamin C have on the body?
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps to neutralize free-radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that are known to damage healthy cells in our skin and our bodies by causing oxidative stress. When you cut an apple and leave it exposed to oxygen, it turns brown, this is a result of oxidation. The same way it is important for us to consume foods rich in antioxidants to support our body’s immune health, topical antioxidants support our skin in its fight against outside aggressors like UV exposure and chemical pollution.
The easiest way to understand the benefits of vitamin C is that helps keep our bodies and our skin healthy. Daily use of a topical vitamin C has been shown to help fight the signs of premature skin aging, help promote collagen, improve discoloration in the skin, and boost skin radiance.
But are all vitamin C skincare products created equally? Unfortunately, not all products contain a stable form of this wonderful antioxidant. Our skincare experts here at CCSD recommend using serums that contain between 10-30% L-ascorbic acid or THD ascorbate, as these are the most active and purest forms of vitamin C.
So, when is a good time to incorporate a vitamin C serum into your skincare; honestly…yesterday but there is no time like the present to start working towards healthier and more youthful skin.
